More than a million pounds of government funding has been secured for two brownfield housing developments in Wolverhampton.

Preparation work on the former Loxdale Primary School in Bilston and Stowheath Day Training Centre, in East Park, is due to start in the new year.

More than seven acres (2.8 hectares) of brownfield land will be used to create 150 new homes, City of Wolverhampton Council said.

The £1.4m of funding is expected to provide hundreds of construction jobs and apprenticeship opportunities in the city.

The council's deputy leader and cabinet member for housing Steve Evans said: "This vital funding will enable us to kickstart this exciting scheme that makes the best use of council assets and fits with our brownfield first policy."

Local residents had the opportunity to have their say on the initial designs in a consultation last year.

Mr Evans added the development would provide new and better affordable homes for key workers in area.
