A man in his 80s has been killed in a lorry crash.
Northumbria Police said the pedestrian was hit by a Scania HGV on the A1 southbound, near the Metrocentre in Gateshead, at about 10:15 GMT.
A section of the road was closed in both directions for about four hours.
The force said the man died at the scene and the lorry driver stayed to help officers.
Sgt Dave Roberts said police were keen to hear from any motorists who were in the area at the time.
Officers believe the pedestrian was linked to a white Ford Edge car parked nearby.
