A police officer has been charged over the death of a father-of-four who was hit by a police vehicle.

Ian Hynes, 62, died in hospital after the incident in Livingston, West Lothian, on Boxing Day 2022.

The collision happened on Almond Link Road, less than a mile from Livingston Police Station.

The 32-year-old officer was charged following an investigation by the police watchdog.

The Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (Pirc) said its report had been submitted to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said it could not comment on the nature charge until the officer had appeared in court.

A spokesperson added: 鈥淭he procurator fiscal has received a report from Pirc. The report is under consideration.鈥

Digby Brown Solicitors said it was supporting Mr Hynes' family with a fatal accident claim.

A spokesman said: 鈥淚an鈥檚 family have been left devastated by this truly upsetting and untimely loss."

New sentencing guideline toughening up penalties for death by driving offences were issued by the Scottish Sentencing Council in January.
