A motorist has died after his car was hit by a van close to a village pub.

The 61-year-old driver of a grey BMW died at the scene of the crash, on Chester Road, near Northwich, at about 16:30 BST on Monday.

A 48-year-old man, who was a passenger in the BMW, and a 70-year-old man who was driving a black Volkswagen Transporter van, have both been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

An appeal has been made by Cheshire Police for anyone who may have seen the crash, on the A556 near to the Vale Royal Abbey Arms, to come forward.

The force said the two injured men had been taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital after being treated by paramedics.

Ch Insp John Forshaw said officers were doing "all we can to establish what took place".

“We believe that the BMW had been travelling from Chester towards Northwich, while the van was travelling in the opposite direction towards Chester."
