Police have applied to hold a man in custody for longer in connection with the deaths of a mother and her adult son at a house in a village.
Essex Police was called to Cambridge Road in Ugley, near Bishop's Stortford, to reports of two "seriously injured" people at 21:50 BST on Tuesday.
Officers discovered a man in his 20s and a woman in her 50s. They both died at the scene and have been named locally as Maria Nugara and Giuseppe Morreale.
Police arrested a man, 63, from Ugley, on suspicion of murder and said detectives had applied to keep him in custody until midnight on Friday.
Essex Police said: "[We] can confirm we have applied for a warrant of further detention for the suspect arrested, which allows our officers an additional 36 hours to keep them in custody.
"This will be in place until about midnight on Friday."
A neighbour, who did not want to be named, described the woman as "a nice lady, friendly".
Another neighbour, who also wished to remain anonymous, said: "It's the first time we've ever seen anything like this.
"It's so shocking."
