Former social club could be turned into flats

A proposal to convert a permanently closed social club in Sheffield into flats has been submitted.

The development would see the former Chaucer Family Social Club on Chaucer Close turned into seven flats.

Sheffield City Council planning officers have until 15 July to decide whether to approve the plans, which have received objections from nine residents.

One wrote they could not say how 鈥渧ehemently鈥 they opposed the plans and raised issues with the loss of green space, parking, traffic, noise, disruption and safety.

In a statement uploaded on to the council planning portal, the people behind the plans said that the club had experienced a 鈥渃hequered鈥 history with previous spells of mismanagement, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Eventually, it had become clear that the business was not viable and the opening of another pub close to the premises did not help either, the statement added.

One resident opposed the proposed development, citing "ongoing anti-social behaviour, drug dealing, prostitution and excessive vehicles which are already obstructions to essential services鈥 and "the 17 apartments that have already been granted in the church next to the building鈥.
