Warning over thefts from home renovation projects

Homes being renovated and newly built are being targeted by thieves looking for metal and materials, police have warned.

North Yorkshire Police said unoccupied building sites in the Rawcliffe and Clifton areas of York have been stripped of items such as copper wiring, diesel and household appliances.

The owners of properties that are not currently lived in have been advised to make regular visits to check on security.

The force said: "Remodelling a home can be exciting, but can create lapses in home security."

Homeowners are being urged to contact police if they see anyone acting suspiciously while work is being carried out.

Lead, brass and paperwork that could be used to commit identity fraud have also been taken.

Police have advised renovators to only employ reputable contractors, to consider using surveillance, and to make surprise visits to try and deter thieves.
