A tipper truck driver who fell asleep at the wheel and hit a wall has been sentenced.

Lukasz Krasnik was on his way to deliver a load of gravel when he lost control of his lorry in Percy Street, Old Basford, Nottingham, at about 10:25 GMT on Thursday 2 November 2023.

He collided with a lamppost, a bollard and a garden wall, crossed the pavement and came to a stop just a few feet from a residential property.

Krasnik, of Dalkeith Walk in Thringstone, near Coalville, Leicestershire, told police at the scene that he must have fallen asleep at the wheel.

He had no known medical issues and tested negative for drink and drugs at the scene.

The 37-year-old later pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving.

Appearing at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Friday, he was given a 12 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

He was also banned from driving for one year and ordered to pay court costs of £156.

Sgt Steve Waft, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said it was lucky there were no injuries.

He added: “Nodding off even for a few seconds can have catastrophic consequences.”
