More than 200 homes are to be built on a former colliery site in Barnsley after councillors approved final plans.

In total 221 homes with parking, public open spaces and play areas will be built on the Wakefield Road site.

The project, which was was originally outlined in 2018 by Gleeson Homes, was approved by Barnsley Council on Tuesday.

Under the agreement Gleeson Homes will contribute £1.1m towards primary and secondary school capacity, and provide 22 affordable homes within the development.

The housebuilder will also pay £206,500 for off-site green spaces and £109,200 for heritage assets, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Local residents had submitted two objections raising concerns over potential loss of light and views from neighbouring properties, as well as the distribution of affordable housing and possible construction disruptions.

One resident also suggested that wheelie bins should be stored in discreet locations.
