Police have advised residents in an area of Stoke-on-Trent there will be an increased officer presence for the rest of the day following a report of gunshots.
The Staffordshire force said a member of the public phoned at 15:35 BST on Tuesday to say they had heard shots near Winchester Avenue in Bentilee.
The force added it was unaware of any injuries.
But it said a large cordon had been put in place around Shenfield Green, Winchester Avenue and Aylesbury Road as officers made inquiries, with firearms officers and colleagues from the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helping with searches.
