Shop worker stabbed in charity box theft

A shop worker was stabbed while trying to apprehend a thief who stole a charity box.

South Yorkshire Police said the incident took place on Firth Park road in Sheffield on Wednesday morning.

Katrina Dixon, 40, of no fixed abode, has been charged with wounding with intent, theft from a shop and possession of a sharp weapon in a public place in connection with the offence.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries not believed to be either life-threatening or life-altering, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

Ms Dixon appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Thursday where her case was sent to Sheffield Crown Court for a hearing on 29 November.

Police said staff from the store had followed and apprehended a suspect after a charity box was stolen from the counter.

During the incident, the man was stabbed and another worker was bitten on the hand.

Officers recovered a craft knife from the scene.

Insp Alec Gibbons said: "Retail workers should not have to face threatening behaviour or violence in the workplace, and it's incidents like this that show how retail crime is not victimless."
