A teenager accused of stabbing a schoolgirl to death will face a murder trial.

Holly Newton, 15, was found with stab wounds in Priestpopple in Hexham, Northumberland, on 27 January last year.

The Queen Elizabeth High School pupil later died in hospital from her wounds.

A 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on 15 July. No plea has yet been entered.

At the time of her death, Holly's school described her as "a truly lovely student who was quiet, conscientious, helpful and kind".

Her family paid tribute to their "popular girl who was loved by so many people".

They said she "had her whole life ahead of her" and added they were "still coming to terms with the fact that our beautiful and loving girl is no longer with us".

Queen Elizabeth High School held a service for Holly, with a tree and plaque placed in the grounds in her honour.
