A woman in her 40s has died after being struck by a car.

Norfolk Police said the incident happened at 15:27 BST on Thursday on Dereham Road near the junction with Britannia Way in Costessey, near Norwich.

Police closed Dereham Road while emergency services, including the air ambulance, attended the scene. The road was reopened at about 21:30 BST.

The victim, a pedestrian, died at the scene.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to reports of a collision involving a brown Volkswagen Passat and woman on Dereham Road.

"Sadly, despite efforts from emergency services the pedestrian, a woman in her 40s, died at the scene."

Police thanked members of the public who assisted with first aid before the emergency services arrived.

Sgt Ben Hawkins, said: "This was a traumatic incident for all involved and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who sadly died.

"We are aware there was a large number of people in the area, due to the busy school run, who will have witnessed the collision."
