A man has been charged after a football club's charity tins were stolen in a break-in.

South Shields FC said its premises on Shaftesbury Avenue in the town were broken into in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A post on the club's Facebook page said: "The perpetrator targeted the club, stealing cash from children's charity tins, bottles of spirits, kids' sweets, and items from the vending machine."

A man, 30, of South Shields, has been charged with two counts of burglary and is due to appear in court later.
