A women’s rugby team has made history by winning a national final for the second year in a row.

Workington Zebra Finches beat Essex's Westcliff Ladies 22-10 on Saturday to take the Papa John’s Community Cup Plate.

Captain Charlotte Cammack said the team had to work extra hard after going down to 14 players early in the game, at the Sixways Stadium in Worcester.

"It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and you’ve just got to go for it and that’s what we did as a team,” she said.

The west Cumbrian club has praised the "fantastic" community support for helping the team get to the final to secure the silverware.

It needed to raise £6,000 to pay for travel and accommodation.

Ms Cammack added: “For the second year running, for people to put their hands in their pockets and donate to us, we’re very grateful and thankful to everyone who has donated and sponsored us.”
