A 35-year-old man died when a car hit a tree.

Police were called to the crash in the Newton-le-Willows area of Merseyside at about 22:30 BST on Monday.

A white Ford Kuga - in which the man was a passenger - had been travelling along Southworth Road when it hit the tree, close to the junction of Mere Road.

Merseyside Police said a 35-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

Police said no other vehicles were involved in the crash, in which another man in his 30s was injured.

Road closures were put in place in the area while accident investigation work was carried out and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Detective Sergeant Andy Roper from the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the man who sadly passed away."

Anyone with any information is being urged to contact the force.
