Military personnel and veterans can travel for free on trains to attend Remembrance Sunday events, South Western Railway (SWR) has said.

SWR said those travelling in uniform, or who can show identification, will be eligible for the gesture funded by the Department for Transport.

The train operator said the offer is applicable across the country, adding it will be available for volunteers attending London Poppy Day events on Thursday.

Peter Williams, customer and commercial director for SWR, said many colleagues had a "proud background in the armed forces".

鈥淩emembrance Sunday is an important opportunity for people across the country to reflect on the sacrifices made by generations of service personnel," Mr Williams said.

鈥淎longside the rest of the railway industry, we are pleased to honour this sacrifice by offering free travel to active personnel and veterans attending Remembrance Sunday and London Poppy Day events."
