A man has been charged more than two years after a motorbike rider died in a crash on his way home from Europe.

John Wood was returning from a 15-day touring holiday when he was involved in a collision with a grey Audi A3 in Newcastle, on 24 September 2021.

The 62-year-old, from Blyth in Northumberland, died at the scene.

Northumbria Police said a 39-year-old man had been charged with causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving.

The crash took place on the A1 northbound, about 300m from the A69 slip road at Denton Burn.

It happened about 25 miles (40km) from Mr Wood's home.

He had travelled thousands of miles around France and Spain during his holiday, his family said.

Following his death, Mr Wood's family described him as a "hugely proud and dedicated family man".

They asked people to "remember John for the wonderful person he was".
