A suspected explosive device found on a beach has been deemed safe and left in situ.

The object was found on Redcar Beach near to the Stray Cafe on Monday.

Cleveland Police put up a cordon and told members of the public to avoid the area while investigations were carried out.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists have since concluded that the object is "non-hazardous".

A spokesperson for the 11 EOD and Search Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps confirmed the device had been left at the scene.

Neither the Ministry of Defence nor Cleveland Police were able to give any further information.
