A car on fire caused traffic delays and the closure of a Cornish road as flames spread to a hedge and nearby lamp post.

Fire crews from Callington and Saltash were called to the blaze at a roundabout on the A388 at Callington after the car caught alight shortly before 17:00 BST on Thursday.

Traffic service Inrix reported that traffic was temporarily "blocked in both directions" because of a "car fire between Liskeard turning and Dupath turn-off".

Eye witness Brett Hunt described the incident as a "proper hefty fire with the electronics popping out of the engine".

Mr Hunt said: "The traffic was building up more and more while the fire was slowly spreading into the hedge next to it.

"Firstly the police turned up, then a few minutes later two fire engines did."

Mr Hunt said the fire "was put out within 20-30 minutes or so".

"The road was closed in all directions while the event was happening. Everyone was okay though by the looks of it," he added.

After the fire was successfully put out the scene was cleared shortly after 19:00 BST.

Police were called to help with traffic control, the fire service said.
