British Airways says it will increase its fuel surcharge on long-haul flights for the second time in three months.

From Tuesday, 8 February, passengers will pay at least an extra 拢12 per journey sector - taking the surcharge to between 拢75 and 拢125 depending on flight length and class of travel.

BA said the increase was the result of the rising cost of oil and jet fuel since the last rise in December.

Short-haul flights are unaffected by the changes.

But first-class travellers will see the cost go up by 拢17 per journey sector.

Latest move

BA last increased the fuel surcharge in December when it raised the cost by 拢10 per sector.

The previous increase prior to December was in June 2008, after which it reduced the surcharge twice.

The latest changes mean a return flight will have at least a 拢24 surcharge increase.

The changes will mean:

  • For World Traveller flights over nine hours, the surcharge will increase from 拢76 a sector to 拢88
  • On these flights of less than nine hours, it will increase from 拢63 a sector to 拢75
  • For World Traveller Plus, flights over nine hours will see the surcharge increase from 拢94.50 a sector to 拢106.50
  • On these flights of less than nine hours, it will increase from 拢73 per sector to 拢85
  • For First and Club World flights over nine hours, it will increase from 拢108 per sector to 拢125
  • On these flights of less than nine hours, it will increase from 拢88 per sector to 拢105

Surcharges were introduced to help airlines with the rising cost of jet fuel and have come to make up a significant part of the price of an airline ticket.
