In pictures: Oscars fashion
Best supporting actress winner Melissa Leo rejected the tight denim mini-skirts of her character in The Fighter and chose a delicate cream gown with a slit front, which showed off her gold and cream platform heels.
Best actress winner Natalie Portman proved glamour and pregnancy are not mutually exclusive in a purple Rodarte dress.
It was not Amy Adams' L'Wren Scott dress that drew attention from the fashionistas, but the reported $1.35m (拢800,000) worth of jewellery that she wore.
Helena Bonham Carter, who is well known for her off-beat fashion sense, donned a demure black dress for the event. But the actress showed photographers she was backing the Brits all the way by wearing a small flag under her gown.
Best supporting actress nominee Hailee Steinfeld wore a Marchesa dress for the ceremony. The 14-year-old says she helped design the peach tulle gown.
Actress Anne Hathaway, the co-host of this year's Academy Awards ceremony at Hollywood's Kodak theatre, changed outfits several times throughout the show. The Alice In Wonderland star chose a Valentino gown for the red carpet.
Natalie Portman's Black Swan co-star Mila Kunis was one of the first A-listers to turn up. The actress wore a graceful Elie Saab violet haute-couture gown.
Josh Brolin and best actor nominee Javier Bardem eschewed the traditional black tuxedo when presenting the Oscars for best original and best adapted screenplay.
Red was popular at this year's awards, as Sandra Bullock also chose to wear a sculptured, strapless Vera Wang dress in the striking colour.
Scarlett Johansson teamed her magenta stretch-lace gown by Dolce and Gabbana with a beautiful ornate ring.
Winter's Bone star and best actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence wore a simple Calvin Klein dress made for her by designer Francisco Costa. The 20-year-old lost out to Natalie Portman in the category.
Cate Blanchett chose a Givenchy dress for the glittering ceremony. The pleated, pale wisteria dress was embroidered with pearls and crystals covered in leather and a swathe of yellow beads around the neck and back.
Halle Berry floated up the red carpet in another Marchesa gown. She told one reporter that she is a "slave for fashion" and loves seeing the stars glammed up at the Academy Awards.
