Tom Hooper's epic Les Miserables has finally been knocked off the top of the UK and Ireland box office chart by Disney animation Wreck-It Ralph.

The tale of the arcade game bruiser who wants to be liked took 拢4.5m in its opening weekend.

It was the highest three-day figure for an animated feature since Ice Age: Continental Drift was released in July.

Les Miserables, which had a four-week run at the top, took 拢1.6m for a cumulative total of 拢33.4m.

The Dan Mazer comedy I Give It A Year debuted at number three with 拢1.5m, while Django Unchained continued to do well at four, taking 拢1.1m for a running tally of 拢12.4m.

But there was disappointment for Sir Anthony Hopkins and Dame Helen Mirren film Hitchcock, which had to settle for eighth spot in its opening week after pulling in 拢606,817 for a weak average of 拢1,589 across 382 screens.

By comparison, I Give It A Year opened at 396 locations while Wreck-It Ralph opened at 501.

The other new entry in the top 10 was zombie romance-flick Warm Bodies, which debuted at six behind Denzel Washington's Flight.

Lincoln, Life of Pi and The Impossible made up the rest of the top 10 at seven, nine and 10 respectively.
