On this week's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden discussed the resignation of former transport secretary Louise Haigh over a decade-old fraud offence.

Today's host, Victoria Derbyshire, showed a past clip of Sir Keir Starmer stating that you "cannot be a lawmaker and a lawbreaker" and asked if the current Prime Minister is a hypocrite.

McFadden disagreed, saying he believes Starmer has appointed "a good cabinet".

But Labour's Diane Abbott, also on the programme, said Starmer knew about Haigh's past conviction from the start, questioning, "so why throw her under the bus? It makes him look bad."

McFadden also addressed migration, as the UK reached a net migration record of 906,000 in the year to June 2023. He told Derbyshire the government won't include a numerical target in their plan this week, as "targets for net migration haven’t worked very well".

Derbyshire also questioned Shadow Environment Secretary Victoria Atkins on migration. Atkins acknowledged the previous government aimed to reduce immigration but failed, but said the new leader Kemi Badenoch has promised a cap.

Good morning and welcome back to another week of Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, with the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Victoria Derbyshire filling in for Laura.

In the week that saw MPs voting in favour of legalising assisted dying for some terminally ill people in England and Wales we’re joined by Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden, who will chat with Victoria about what the government’s next steps may be.

Remember that this doesn’t mean the bill has become law, but it allows it to continue for further parliamentary scrutiny with the backing of the elected chamber.

Shadow environment secretary Victoria Atkins is also on the show. She’s only recently moved into the position, having been appointed by new Tory leader Kemi Badenoch.

Labour's Diane Abbott - the longest continuously serving female MP - joins the panel this morning to give her opinions on the week’s news and will be joined by chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Conservative peer Craig Mackinlay.

Cate Blanchett is also on the programme this week, speaking about her new film, Rumours - released next Friday. The film's director, Guy Maddin, joins her.
