A section of the M54, heading west between junction two for Wolverhampton and three for Cosford, will be closed from 20:00 on Friday to allow for repairs.
Highways England says it expects one lane to reopen at 08:00 on Saturday and is then planning another overnight closure between 20:00 and 08:00 on Sunday.
The work is being described as "emergency repairs" and diversions will be in place.

Five-year-old Ivy, it said, was in a "climate-controlled" vehicle with another dog yesterday and was given immediate medical care by her handler before being taken to a local vets where she died.
The force is "fully investigating the circumstances leading up to her death", adding the other dog in the vehicle was found "not to be in any distress or unwell state".
A fire at a Staffordshire stables was caused by embers from a bonfire, the county's fire service has said.
it says no animals were hurt, but are advising people not to have bonfires if possible and to at least have water standing by.

The fire at a recycling centre in Stourport, Worcestershire, is now out, the fire service says.
I've been to Barracks Road, where the blaze happened this afternoon, and fire crews have been packing away their equipment.
It was reported earlier by the fire service that a tanker had hit a building.
But I've spoken to the managing director of Slickers Recycling and he's clarified that an oil tanker was involved but there was no collision.
He said they collect oil to recycle and, after draining oil from a vehicle this afternoon, it caught fire, although at this stage, they're not certain why.

A big new retail development in
The local authority has decided to put together a new town centre partnership to improve and revamp the area.
It says a report from consultants suggests Sutton Coldfield has been "very resilient" through some challenging times but it's not immune from ongoing difficulties in the retail sector.
However, the council says it's unlikely there will be a major new retail development "for the foreseeable future" and it'll look instead to improve the environment in the town centre, make it more accessible and better promote it.
Shropshire Council has admitted it hasn’t even shown a report about a controversial £80,000 grant to the councillors it was written for.
The local authority’s audit committee met last week to consider how the money was awarded to The New Saints football club.
There have been complaints from some councillors who say the majority of the money has not been paid back, six years after it was given.
The authority has refused to make the report public and has now confirmed that even the committee it was produced for only saw a summary of it.
TNS maintains it met all its obligations under the agreement.
Three men, who raided a Birmingham jewellers, and then led police in a chase around Sparkhill, have been jailed.
James Farricker, 48, of Birmingham Road West Bromwich was jailed for 14 years after the robbery at Dubai Jewellers in Stratford Road.
At Birmingham Crown Court on 3 July Anthony Reid, 49, of Austin Lane Newtown, was jailed for 12 years.
Twenty-year-old Billey Abbotts received a nine and a half year sentence - all three admitted a charge of robbery.

A war memorial is being rededicated this weekend after being restored.
The memorial sits in Hednesford Park which has seen £2.2m of lottery cash spent on it by Cannock Chase Council.
The authority admits it had become overgrown, but is now clean and surrounded by flower beds.

It's happened in the Barracks Road area to the south of the town, but Twitter user @FizzleW took this photo from the north of Stourport in the Burlish area:
