The black Carbrini rucksack is thought to belong to Leam James, 27, who was reported missing after travelling to Hull on 5 December.
A cyclist handed it into Water's Edge Visitor Centre on Maltkiln Road in Barton-upon-Humber on the morning of 6 December.
The man who handed it in is thought to live in the Hull or Hessle and cycled to the centre "quite regularly" although he hasn't visited since that morning.
Police want to speak to the cyclist and say he may have "important information" which could help them find the missing person from Great Harwood in Lancashire.
Boarding facilities at a Lincolnshire school, which has been at the centre of a police investigation, can reopen, Ofsted has said.
The accommodation, at the Kisimul school in Swinderby, was closed in November due to "serious safeguarding concerns."

The MP spearheading efforts to obtain a Norway-style deal on Brexit is facing a fight for his career after local members launched an attempt to deselect him.
In a letter leaked to , Grantham and Stamford MP Nick Boles鈥 association chairman revealed that over 100 local Tory members had written to him in the last few weeks and that 鈥渙ver 99%鈥 want him to be deselected.
The move comes after Mr Boles revealed he received a death threat after the no deal Brexit bill vote.
Mr Boles said he would fight for the best interests of his constituents as Brexit-supporting Conservatives moved to oust him.

A man stabbed to death in Boston knew the two men arrested on suspicion of his murder, police have said.
Two men, aged 32 and 33, were arrested on Thursday. They remain in police custody.
"We can now confirm that the arrested men and the victim were all known to each other," a spokesperson said.

An animal rescue centre in Lincolnshire says it has received support from across the country after it was featured on 大象传媒 One this week.
The Ark at North Somercotes was served with a noise abatement order last month after complaints from a neighbour about the noise of barking dogs.

A sentencing hearing is due to begin at the Old Bailey for a man from Lincoln who admitted sending Punish a Muslim Day letters.
David Parnham, 35, sent the letters to mosques, Muslim parliamentarians including Lord Ahmed of Wimbledon, the Queen, David Cameron and Theresa May.
He pleaded guilty in October to 15 offences, including soliciting to murder and staging a bomb hoax.
