Jay Kay says he's "quite nervous" about releasing the first Jamiroquai studio album in five years.

Rock Dust Light Star is out on 1 November with single White Knuckle getting its first play on the Chris Moyles show with Vernon Kay.

The singer said: "It's quite a shock to the system. Since we did a studio album, it's been about five years.

"You've worked so long on something and then you hear it for real and people get to hear it for real."

Jamiroquai's last studio album, Dynamite, came out in 2005 and since then Jay Kay's changed record company and has got a new band together.

He says there will definitely be a tour but he won't be doing as much dancing as he used to.

"People have to be realistic," he said. "I've got a small pod developing from beer.

"I do run and I do try and keep fit so I think you just have to look after yourself.

"There is an element of me that's gone carpet and slippers."

'Sweaty head'

Jay Kay, who turned 40 last year, is famous for his use of elaborate hats and headgear on stage.

But the singer says these days he gets too hot to wear them for an entire set.

Jay Kay says he now spends more time at home than driving his cars

"I've got new headgear," he admitted. "It's all about weight and heat.

"I did pull it off the other day and said, 'I'm just sick of being covered in a film of sweat everywhere I go.' I've always got a sweaty head."

Jay Kay is also famous for his love of fast cars but denies his hobby is out of step with his environmental credentials.

He said: "[People] have to realise the amount of time I spend driving cars is very, very little.

"I should think I do less miles than anybody else because I work from home and I just haven't got the time.

"Most of the stuff I've got is 40 or 50 years old. In a way I'm just preserving stuff.

"It's more like art for me. I think I use them in a reasonably sensible manner."
