One Direction were the big winners at Radio 1's Teen Awards collecting trophies for best British single, album and music act.

X Factor, Tom Daley and Daniel Radcliffe were further winners, as voted by Radio 1 listeners.

Paralympian Ellie Simmonds collected the inspirational hero of 2012 prize.

The event also recognised three teen heroes; ordinary teenagers who have coped with extraordinary situations.

"We've turned our sadness into something good to help other folk," said 17-year-old Teen Hero winner Jenna.

"My twin brother Calum died when we were 12 from a brain tumour and he always said 'why not me' instead of 'why me' so we just put his positive attitude into everything."

George, 13, was named Teen Hero for raising 拢15k for a local charity after he was treated for a brain tumour aged nine.

"I went through over a year of radiotherapy and chemotherapy," George said, "and then went on to raise money for charity."

It was volunteering with troubled teens and helping the elderly that earned 15-year-old Chelsea her Teen Hero status, after turning her own life around.

"I came from quite a bad background," said Chelsea.

"I live in a council flat and it's a really rough area with a lot of crime and things like that."

Celebrities 'humbled'

Professor Green and Olympic medal-winner Louis Smith were on the panel to choose the eventual teen hero winners.

"It was really hard to be able to choose a winner," admitted Smith.

"I came out feeling very different from that meeting. It was very humbling."

It's the second year Professor Green has been on the panel.

He said: "The Teen Awards is brilliant because it champions people for real achievement.

"You know it's brilliant for people to get awarded things for their efforts in the entertainment industry but the real winners are the winners of the Teen Hero awards."
