Lady Gaga says recent surgery which forced the cancellation of her world tour revealed "a broken hip" and "giant craters".

The singer's Born This Way Ball tour came to an abrupt end in February in Montreal when she experienced chronic hip pain and had to call off 21 shows.

"My injury was actually a lot worse than just a tear," she says.

"I had broken my hip. Nobody knew, and I haven't even told the fans yet."

The star is scheduled to appear for the first time since her operation as the headline act at this year's MTV Video Music Awards (25 August) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The 27-year-old told WWD magazine in an interview: "We got all the MRIs finished before I went to surgery, there were giant craters, a hole in my hip and the cartilage was just hanging out.

"I had a tear on the inside of my joint and a huge breakage."

The singer adds she stopped the tour just in time: "The surgeon told me that if I had done another show I might have needed a full hip replacement.

"I would have been out at least a year, maybe longer."

After recuperating for about six months Lady Gaga's single Applause is to be released 19 August. Her third studio album ARTPOPP is due out in November.
