One Direction's Louis Tomlinson has pulled out of his Doncaster Rovers debut through injury, announcing the decision on Twitter.

The 21-year-old was due to play in a reserve game against Scunthorpe on Wednesday night.

The singer signed up to the club earlier this year, to raise money for charity.

But earlier today, the star pulled out of the match which was expected to attract more than 2,000 fans.

He tweeted: "Unfortunately due to injury I cannot play at this week's Doncaster Rovers match.

"I will still be attending the match on the bench."

A statement from the club reads: "Unfortunately due to injury Louis will not be able to play in this week's Rovers Central League game against Scunthorpe United. Louis will still be attending the match on the bench.

"Fans that have bought tickets for the match can apply for a full refund. Alternatively they can still attend the match and buy a ticket for the rescheduled game, when a date has been set, at a reduced price of £3."

Last month, the singer suffered an injury in a charity game in Glasgow after a tackle with Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The pair were playing in a match at Celtic Park organised by former midfielder Stiliyan Petrov, who retired in May, a year after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

In a tweet this afternoon, Louis said: "I will play in another game in 2014, to be announced."

The singer joined Rovers on non-contract terms earlier this year and was given the squad number 28.

It is unlikely he will feature in any first team games for the Championship outfit.
