Hillary Clinton is running for president with the full backing of Barack Obama.

He officially endorsed her at the Democrat convention.

"There has never been a man or woman, not me, not Bill [Clinton], nobody more qualified [to be president] than Hillary," he told the crowd.

They beamed at each other, hugged on stage and looked like the very best of friends. But it hasn't always been that way.

Senator Hillary Clinton announced that she was running to be candidate for president.

She was already a household name, thanks to her years in the White House as first lady.

A junior senator from Illinois also decided to run: Barack Obama.

Both wanted to represent the Democrats.

She pointed out his lack of experience and called him "unqualified".

One of his campaign adverts slammed her, saying "she'll say anything and change nothing".

When it became clear that Hillary Clinton wasn't going to win all those years ago, she came on board and campaigned for Barack Obama.

When he won he rewarded her with a top job: secretary of state.

It wasn't always easy. Some of her entourage struggled to adjust.

"I came to realise that her unbelievable work ethic wasn't for praise or attention - that she was in this for everyone who needs a champion," Obama said.

She often told foreign leaders that her relationship with the president was an example of how politicians could put their personal feelings to one side and do the right thing.

And so, it became normal to see the former rivals working closely together.

Ok, so we doubt they are hanging out together hunting Pokemon this weekend.

And Obama didn't endorse her until it was clear she was going to win the Democratic nomination.

But now he is campaigning for her. And they're cuddling.

The president's approval ratings are strong, so the Clinton team will hope some of that much-needed popularity will rub off on her.

And while Obama is stepping down after his two terms, he probably isn't loving the idea of Donald Trump in the White House undoing bits of his legacy.

So now they really need each other...
