CES 2012 in pictures: Gadgets, celebrities and kangaroos

Rohan Marley, son of music legend Bob, showed off the Bag of Rhythm - just one of the many new technologies on display at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Among the gadgets on show at the three-day event was the Wi.Spi - a remote-controlled helicopter providing video surveillance and night-vision capabilities.

Making his company's last planned keynote at the event, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer (right) embraced American TV host Ryan Seacrest in typically outlandish style.

Back to more serious matters, Mr Ballmer unveiled the devices Microsoft is banking its mobile future on - a range of Windows-powered smartphones.

Other smartphones, such as what's being called the "world's slimmest" Huawei Ascend P1 S, were also vying for attention at the event which attracts about 140,000 people each year.

Brands go to great lengths to make their presentation the talk of the floor. Sony put on a 3D extravaganza to show off new laptops, mobiles and camera devices.

Sony also showed off its X-Reality picture processing engine, demonstrated by executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai.

Elsewhere, the event was graced with a touch of Hollywood as Social Network star Justin Timberlake showed off his real-life internet venture, MySpaceTV.

Others, like Dish Network's president Joe Clayton, opted for a far cutesier approach as he introduced Joey the kangaroo to his delighted audience.
