Snow in England heralds start of meteorological winter

Snowy scenes have marked the start of meteorological winter in parts of England, with further snowfall and freezing conditions forecast.

Snow fell overnight in south-west England, parts of Yorkshire and the North East.

Forecasters expect hilly areas, including the North York Moors, to see more snow fall later.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow warning for ice and snow for eastern England overnight into Saturday.

While the wintry weather is providing much inspiration for photographers, it was less welcome for motorists left temporarily stranded on the A171 in North Yorkshire.
