Canoeists were forced to carry their boats after the canal emptied

A section of the Kennet and Avon canal in Berkshire is being refilled after it was drained of water at the weekend.

The stretch between Hungerford and Kintbury falls between two locks and British Waterways believe the lock paddles were left open.

Timothy Hiss who was walking along the empty canal on Saturday said he saw two canoeists carrying their boats and a long boat struggling to turn around.

British Waterways said they checked on water levels all year round.

Mr Hiss said: "Small fish were stranded in the muddy puddles left behind as the water receded."

British Waterways, the public corporation responsible for the canal, said it would send an engineer to check the water level was back to normal.
