A 31-year-old man has been arrested after a man was found stabbed to death at a tram stop in Birmingham.

The man, in his 50s, was found collapsed at Benson Road tram stop, in Winson Green, on Friday afternoon, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

He had been repeatedly stabbed after getting off the tram alone.

Det Ch Insp Paul Langley said there was no indication of a motive for the attack, but officers were working on "several hypotheses".

A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out on the victim - who has yet to be indentified - on Sunday.

Officers were initially unsure where the man was attacked, but say they now believe he was stabbed on the footpath leading away from the tram stop.

Appealing for witnesses to come forward, Mr Langley said: "My detectives are trying to establish the events leading up to that point, and crucially how the man came to sustain these injuries.

"We have several lines of inquiry, including reviewing CCTV footage, and we now know the victim got off of the tram alone at Soho Benson Road and we believe he was injured on the footpath leading away from the stop.

"This was approaching rush hour on a Friday evening and I'm sure there were many people around who may have seen something that could help us."
