A lorry has hit the central reservation of the M4 near Bristol causing major disruption.

Lengthy delays built up following the overnight incident between junction 20, where the M4 meets the M5, and junction 21 where it meets the M48.

The M48 Severn Crossing was closed to eastbound traffic but re-opened just after 10am.

One lane remains closed in each direction on the M4 and police have warned motorists to avoid the area.

Traffic is moving slowly, with 14 miles of queues on the eastbound carriageway starting near Newport, Highways England said.

The lorry driver escaped uninjured from the crash.
