Network Rail has received £2.2m of private money to help improve Cambridge railway station.
It plans to create a larger ticket hall, making it easier for passengers to move through the station.
The funds come from company Brookgate, which is leading an £850m redevelopment of the station and nearby area.
The Brookgate scheme includes building three accommodation blocks for Anglia Ruskin University by 2012 and space for new shops.
