Police have stepped up patrols after a second woman was raped in a city.

The attack happened in Mary Street, in the centre of Carlisle, between 22:00 GMT and 23:00 GMT on Saturday.

It comes as the force is investigating another rape in Carlisle, which happened near the railway station.

Cumbria Police said a woman in her 20s was being supported by officers. Extra police patrols have been put on in the area.

Det Insp Duncan Brooker said officers understood it could "cause concern within the community and public safety is absolutely paramount".

He said he hoped people would "come forward with information or concerns as the investigation continues".

However, police said they were not linking the two attacks.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the assault, which happened at 06:00 GMT on Saturday.

The victim was being supported by police and people have been asked to come forward with information.
