Aircraft were unable to land at Stansted Airport after landing equipment was damaged by an incoming jet

A power failure at Stansted Airport in Essex has delayed thousands of travellers getting away for Christmas.

Flights were still able to take off and land at the airport but queues for departures were growing in the satellite terminal affected.

Power has been restored and delays are currently about an hour.

Managers apologised and said more staff had been sent to the terminal to deal with the number of passengers waiting to depart.

Passengers due to fly later have been advised to contact their airline for more information.

Stansted said neither the main terminal nor the runway were affected and passengers were being taken by bus to their flights.

On Christmas Eve last year, a power failure caused by flooding at Gatwick airport in West Sussex led to severe delays and a number of flight cancellations.
