A man has been arrested for multiple offences after a dog was reported to be out of control, police have said.
Essex Police said it was called to Little Wakering Road in Little Wakering, near Southend-on-Sea, at about 17:50 BST on Monday.
An officer was assaulted and sustained minor injuries, the force said.
The 47-year-old man was held on suspicion of possessing a dangerous dog, drink driving and a racially aggravated public order offence.
The man was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, assault, threats to kill, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a bladed article.
In a statement, Insp Dan Hirsch thanked "members of the public who called us" and the officers who "went towards the dangerous situation to protect the public".
