Boys, 9, rescued from frozen lake in Herne Bay

  • Published

Two boys were rescued by fire crews after becoming stuck on an island in the middle of a frozen Kent lake.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the nine-year-olds had walked across the ice on a lake in Herne Bay Memorial Park in Dering Road.

However, crews were called to the lake shortly after 1200 GMT on Sunday after the ice started to crack and the boys were unable to get back.

Watch manager Dick Judge said: "They were both very lucky lads."

He added: "The ice was thick enough to take their weight as they made their way to the island, but soon began breaking up.

"Had the boys fallen through the ice the consequences of their escapades could have been tragic."
