South Wigston bridge closure 'will hurt trade'

  • Published

A district councillor in a Leicestershire town is worried a two-month road closure will hurt trade in the area.

Network Rail is closing the bridge on Blaby Road in South Wigston which links the town with Wigston.

It follows several other lengthy road closures in the area.

The bridge will be closed to road traffic while a waterproof treatment is applied to the surface.

The bridge work will start on 4 July and the bridge will close for seven weeks starting on 11 July.

Councillor John Boyce, of Oadby and Wigston District Council, said: "It will probably cost thousands of pounds in lost trade.

"We don't know what is going to happen when they take the surface off the bridge because we don't know what the state of the bridge is underneath."

A Network Rail statement said: "The improvements are part a vital aspect of our strategy to supply a safe, reliable and efficient rail system for the 21st Century."
