A councillor has resigned from two Leicestershire councils, meaning voters will go to the polls four days before Christmas.

Liberal Democrat Geoff Welsh served on both Leicestershire County Council and Blaby District Council.

His departure leaves a vacancy for the county council's Blaby and Glen Parva division and also for the district council's Glen Parva ward.

Replacements will be voted for on Thursday 21 December.

In a post on Facebook, Mr Welsh said he had stepped down for health reasons and thanked people who had supported him during his 30-year career in local government.

The deadline for nominations of candidates for both seats is 16:00 GMT on 24 November.
