The 69-year-old was driving in Wilton Road in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, when the crash happened at 16:40 BST on Sunday.
Emergency services were called, but the man was "pronounced dead at the scene", Leicestershire Police said.
The force is carrying out an investigation on behalf of His Majesty's coroner.
Det Sgt Emma Mitchell from the serious collision investigation unit said: "We are working to understand how this collision occurred and piece together the movements of the car prior to the incident happening.
"No other vehicles are believed to be involved."
The car, which police say was a grey Renault Zoe, was travelling close to the junction with Nottingham Road and the A607 at the time.
Anyone who was in the area at the time and who might have information or footage, is asked to contact the force.
