Norfolk students demonstrate over tuition fees

Students at the University of East Anglia in Norfolk have been demonstrating against government proposals to raise tuition fees.

Some students also paraded a coffin, symbolising what they said was the "death of higher education".

They also criticised Liberal Democrat MP for Norwich South Simon Wright who had pledged before the election not to support any rises in tuition fees.

Mr Wright said he is still "weighing up the arguments".

Students said they felt Mr Wright had gone back on his word since the election, which he won by about 300 votes.

Mr Wright has said he will not be commenting on the matter further.

Students are staging occupations at universities including Royal Holloway, Plymouth, Birmingham, London South Bank and UWE Bristol.

Marches, walkouts and protest events are also taking place at universities and colleges, including Manchester, Liverpool, Oxford, Leeds, Newcastle and Bournemouth.

Students are protesting against plans to increase tuition fees in England to 拢9,000 per year and to withdraw public funding for university teaching budgets for many subjects.
