A scheme to invest 拢120m in improvements to the A14 is due to be announced by the government.

The work will include widening the road between junctions 7 and 9 in Kettering and reducing congestion on the road in Cambridgeshire.

The project is part of the government's investment plan for infrastructure projects over the next decade.

A pre-announcement is expected ahead of the autumn statement by the Chancellor George Osborne.

The news has been welcomed in Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

'Volume versus capacity'

Russell Roberts, leader of Kettering Borough Council said: "This announcement is the combination of many months of persistent and effective lobbying.

"拢120m will be a fantastic boost to our local economy."

Kettering MP Philip Hollobone also welcomed the investment.

"This investment in the area's infrastructure will provide a real boost to the local and wider economy, and provide additional impetus to the already successful business growth in the area," he said.

John Bridge, chief executive of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, said: "Unless you solve the problem of the volume versus capacity you are not going to have a solution.

"We need a real upgrade of the road to cope with the volume we have now let alone the increase the volume that we are going to get in the future."
