A man is in a critical condition following a crash involving three cars and a lorry in Shropshire.

Fire crews were called to reports of a person trapped in a vehicle on the A41 between Whitchurch and Market Drayton, at about 15:20 GMT on Wednesday.

The injured man, the driver of a car that had crashed head on with the HGV, was cut free by firefighters.

He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Royal Stoke Hospital.

The A41 was closed in both directions between Tern Hill and Whitchurch for several hours following the incident, firefighters from Market Drayton Fire Station reported.

"One of the cars and the heavy goods vehicle had collided head on. The car sustained significant damage, resulting in the male driver being trapped and critically injured," a spokesperson added.

"Firefighters worked using hydraulic cutting, spreading and ramming equipment to gain access to the casualty, and to create space to allow the medical team to administer immediate treatment."
