Go-ahead to close 14 of 26 libraries in Doncaster

Plans to close 14 out of 26 libraries in a South Yorkshire town have been given the go-ahead.

Doncaster Council's cabinet made the decision at a meeting despite a huge campaign by people opposing the cuts.

Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, previously said the plans were a result of government budget cuts.

Lauren Smith, from Save Doncaster Libraries, said the council should be ashamed for "showing little regard to the needs of citizens".

She said: "Doncaster is a struggling town with a failed council.

"It needs its libraries more than ever, and this devastating package of cuts can only serve to further limit the libraries' and the council's ability to improve literacy, wellbeing, social cohesion, a sense of community and civic pride."
