Bus driver hit by falling tree in Surrey 'out of danger'

A bus driver whose vehicle was crushed by a falling oak tree in Surrey no longer has "life-threatening injuries", his employers have said.

The man suffered head and chest injuries when the tree, which was 6ft in diameter, struck the single-decker in strong winds in Witley, Godalming.

He is being treated at St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London.

A Stagecoach spokeswoman said the man's wife had been told his "injuries were no longer life-threatening".

She added: "Obviously he is very seriously injured."

Homes without power

Two passengers on board the bus at the time of the incident on the A283 Petworth Road were unharmed, according to Stagecoach.

The fallen tree also damaged a nearby building.

About 400 homes are still without power following Tuesday's stormy weather.

Residents and a school in Elstead had their supplies cut at about noon.

Southern Electric said they expected power to be restored by about 15:00 GMT.

Part of the roof of Epsom Downs racecourse's new 拢28m grandstand was blown off by the high winds and a stationary light aircraft was blown on to its roof at Redhill Aerodrome.
