A man has died after he was hit by a van as he walked along the A3 in Surrey.

The collision happened just after 04:00 BST on the southbound carriageway, close to the Thursley junction, Surrey Police said.

Emergency services attended, but the man, who police said was in his 20s, died at the scene. His next of kin and the coroner have been informed.

The driver of the van is helping police with their inquiries.

The road was closed for several hours while officers carried out their investigations.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
